Friends' Events 

We hold events which are usually in the form of illustrated talks monthly on Wednesday mornings starting at 10.30 and lasting for an hour. 

These are open to everybody and cost £4 for members and £6 for visitors. 

They take place in the Lecture Theatre at Southampton City Art Gallery. 

Note: Social distancing in still in place in the Lecture Theatre so, at present, numbers are restricted and you have to book your place. You can do this for our next event by pressing the Register button

       Unsettled Landscapes: the Art of the Eerie

    Wednesday 26th January 2022 at 10.30 am

 

Steve Marshall from the St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery and Gill Clarke will show us unsettling and strange landscapes in British art from the 1920's onwards.

Jonny Hannah, Graphic Artist talks about his work

 Jonny Hannah creates extraordinary paintings and prints . He has designed book covers and illustrations , created the branding for jazz festivals, TV programmes, the English National Opera, the Royal Shakespeare company and more.

A City in Recovery:The Earlier Work of Peter Folkes 

Wednesday 30th March at 10.30 am 

 Rod Rumble will tell us about Peter Folkes who arrived in Southampton in 1950. He quickly began to record a city just picking itself up following the devastation of World War Two. This talk will compare Folkes’ early work with present experiences of the city and refer more briefly to his subsequent six decades of work, teaching and painting.
