Ally Hayes and Wendy Stokes present an illustrated tour of Southampton's City Parks

Time & Location

28 Jan 2026, 10:30 – 11:30 GMT

Southampton City Art Gallery, Civic Centre, Commercial Rd, Southampton SO14 7LY, UK

About the event

FoSMAG talks are back in the City Art Gallery Lecture Theatre from January 2026!

Southampton is unique among English towns in that its medieval fields have been preserved in the guise of public parks. In most places these ancient, cultivated fields were swallowed by urbanisation but here they were given the people “in perpetuity”.

Today, the parks offer not only tree shaded havens from the bustle of the shopping centre but also some fascinating historical features. There are also stories to be told that have not left a physical footprint and we will bring you some of these.

Ally and Wendy's book A Walk Around the City Parks is available from October Books in Portswood.
