About the event
This talk will reveal how Kenneth Clark, Southampton City Art Gallery’s first acquisitions advisor, became the driving force behind the creation of the War Artists Advisory Committee in 1939 and examine its aims and achievements. With the spotlight on 6 different war artists to exemplify diverse approaches, styles and experiences, the talk will also investigate how the war affected their later careers and why the WAAC established the foundations of state support for contemporary art that we take for granted today.
