About the event

Stephen Foster MBE is Emeritus Professor at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton. He writes:

I was Director of the John Hansard Gallery for thirty years, from 1987 to 2017, and during that time, in addition to exhibiting painting, drawing and sculpture, I championed the use of photography, film and video, and installation art. I also became aware of the new research agendas of universities and wished to involve myself in it. At the same time, I collaborated with a range of different academic departments working with their unique areas of expertise. I began exploring the history of conceptual art as well as liaising with contemporary artists who practiced the genre, including some of the original proponents. The talk will focus on the development of these themes.
