About the event
Maxwell Armfield and Constance Smedley were an unorthodox couple who both studied at Birmingham School of Art in the late 1900s. They met some years later and married in 1911. Both were highly accomplished in the arts – painting and writing. Tessa West’s double biography traces their lives and artistic careers, living in London, the Cotswolds and in California where their endeavours from embroidery to teaching drama, and to exhibitions of art attracted much interest and critical acclaim.
About Tessa West: I am a writer who lives in Suffolk. I’ve written two other biographies, and I’m currently seeking another subject. Finding someone you want to spend many months with can be tricky, made particularly complicated if there is hardly a market. But when I’ve found that interesting person - or people, in this case - my antennae are already alert and that is where I find the first pleasure of the chase: research.
