About the event

Stanisława de Karłowska was born near Łowicz in 1876. Having begun her art training in Kraków, she continued her studies in Paris. In July 1897 she met the English artist Robert Bevan later of The Camden Town Group and five months later they were married in Warsaw. The couple settled in London and were both highly productive for the remainder of their lives. They were friends with many of the leading Post-Impressionist British artists of the time and Stanislawa was elected to The London Group (Robert was its first treasurer), the Camden Town Group’s successor in 1914. Her work can be seen in many public collections across the UK, including one in Southampton and two in the Tate.

Patrick Baty is a great grandson of Stanisława de Karłowska and Robert Bevan. He initially pursued a career in the Army, but for the last forty years has been interested in the decoration of historic buildings. His work covers research, paint analysis and colour & technical advice. He lectures on a variety of subjects and has published numerous articles on his area of expertise. Patrick has also co-curated several art exhibitions in public galleries (including Southampton) and he and his wife run the family business Papers and Paints, in Chelsea.
