Mark Gertler, a talk by Prof. Aviva Burnstock and Sarah MacDougall
September 12, 2018 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Please note the date for your diary. The Venue will be the Jane Austen Room of the Dolphin Hotel
Sparked by their discovery of a hitherto unknown oil study for Gertler’s masterpiece, Merry-Go-Round (1916, Tate), this talk by Prof. Aviva Burnstock (Head of Conservation, Courtauld Institute of Art) and Sarah MacDougall, the artist’s biographer and cataloguer, draws on their research into making and meaning, c. 1913 -18, in the early work of British-born Jewish painter Mark Gertler (1891 –1939). With a particular focus on Southampton’s two important early paintings, Rabbi and Grandchild and Family Group (both 1913), they explore aspects of Gertler’s practice including underlying compositions, reuse of the painting support and the changes made during the painting process, revealed both by technical study using X-radiography and infrared imaging and through the artist’s own letters.
